Habitat and Connected Landscapes: Recommended for grades K-6 Through an interactive habitat simulation, students take on the roles of different wildlife species, discovering their essential survival needs, and exploring how habitat loss, fragmentation, and human development can affect animal populations. As habitats become limited or disconnected, students examine the challenges wildlife face when competing for resources or navigating barriers such as roads and cities. By reflecting on the connections between healthy habitats, clean water, open space, and biodiversity, students discover how protecting and connecting natural landscapes supports both wildlife and human communities. Sustainable Food Systems: Recommended for grades K-12 In this engaging activity, students explore the journey food takes from farm to plate while making connections between soil health, agriculture, transportation, and environmental sustainability. Through interactive activities, students examine how healthy soils support food production, compare local and global food systems, and evaluate the environmental impacts of food transportation. By analyzing real-world tradeoffs and considering the role of consumers, farmers, and communities, students discover how food choices can influence climate, local economies, and the long-term sustainability of our food system. Climate Change and Natural Climate Solutions: Recommended for grades 4-12 Students investigate the causes and impacts of climate change through a hands-on exploration of how different landscapes absorb and retain heat. By collecting real temperature data from natural and developed surfaces, students examine the urban heat island effect and discover how forests, open spaces, and healthy ecosystems help regulate temperatures and capture carbon. Through scientific inquiry and discussion, students evaluate natural climate solutions and explore how conservation can help communities adapt to a changing climate. Sustainable Design Lab: Recommended for grades 4-12 Students step into the role of city planners as they design a community that balances environmental sustainability with the needs of residents. Working within real-world constraints such as budgets, infrastructure, and land use, students evaluate the tradeoffs involved in creating sustainable communities and make decisions about transportation, energy, food systems, green space, and wildlife habitat. Through collaborative problem-solving and systems thinking, students explore how thoughtful planning can reduce environmental impacts while creating healthy, resilient, and joyful places to live. Freshwater Systems and Water Quality: Recommended for grades K-12 This interactive module has students investigating how water moves through a watershed, how pollution enters freshwater systems, and how natural infrastructure such as wetlands can improve water quality and reduce flooding. Through a hands-on watershed simulation and engineering challenge, students design and test nature-based solutions inspired by real conservation practices used throughout Monmouth County.

Conservation Wagon programming costs a flat fee of $250 per day. Schools serving underrepresented communities are eligible for a scholarship
