It is with heavy hearts that the MCF family bids farewell to one of our longest serving board members, former President, and long-time chairman of our Acquisition Committee – Howard Aronson. Howard passed away on January 12, 2021 after a long and accomplished life.
Howard joined the MCF Board of Trustees in 1983 and served as a loyal advocate for MCF throughout the duration of his 37-year service. While the energy of some fades over time, Howard only seemed to become more passionate and focused as the years passed and he remained engaged and dedicated to MCF’s work. In August 2010, after the passing of Judith Stanley Coleman, MCF’s founder and long-time President, it was Howard that stepped up as President, providing critical leadership during a period of significant transition for the organization. His keen eye for finances, was a gift he shared with MCF as well, providing guidance and oversight as the organization grew and evolved during his tenure.
Perhaps above all else, it was Howard’s witty, joyous, kind, and heart-warming personality that left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He was a wonderful mentor to new staff members, supporters, and trustees. He will be remembered fondly as a true gentleman among men, a loyal friend, and a genuine advocate for land conservation.
He coined the favorite MCF tagline, “You have to spend green to save green”, which indeed captures his wonderful way of stewarding the organization and engaging supporters around the mission of conservation.
He loved Huber Woods and took comfort in nature, spending countless hours on the deck behind his home, nestled in the woods, that felt like a treehouse surrounded by the beautiful forest that he worked energetically to protect.
The MCF board and staff will always remember him walking in Huber Woods and we take comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his beloved wife Jackie.
Placement of a memorial bench at Huber Woods Park in remembrance of Howard has been made possible due to the generosity of a former MCF board member.
